When using antivirus software like Avast, you may receive a warning stating “There are corrupted registries.” A corrupted registry in a Windows PC can lead to severe problems, so it is essential to address it promptly. However, many people might not understand what a registry is or how to fix it. This guide explains what a corrupted registry is and how to repair it.

    What is a Corrupted Registry?

Before delving into what a corrupted registry is, let’s clarify what a registry is. The Windows Registry is a vast database that stores settings and configurations for the operating system and installed software. This system is unique to Windows PCs and does not exist on Macs.

A corrupted registry, as the name suggests, refers to a registry with issues. The registry can become corrupted through normal use of a Windows PC, or it can be damaged by other factors. Here are some possible causes:

Forced Shutdown of the PC: Shutting down your PC improperly can lead to registry corruption because the system and software shut down before the information is correctly saved in the registry.

Manual Registry Editing: Editing the registry by yourself can lead to errors if not done correctly.

Hardware Damage: Physical damage to your hardware can affect the registry.

Virus Infection: Malware and viruses can corrupt the registry.

Often, a corrupted registry might not immediately affect your PC’s performance, but over time, it can cause the system to slow down or, in the worst case, prevent it from booting up. If you notice that your PC’s performance has changed or become sluggish, a corrupted registry might be the culprit.

How to Handle a Corrupted Registry Detected by Avast

Avast is an antivirus software developed in the Czech Republic, widely used worldwide, including in Japan, due to its availability in a free version. During a virus scan with Avast, you might receive a warning that says, “There are XX corrupted registries.”

However, in the free version of Avast, the feature to resolve myfans ダウンロード corrupted registries is not available. To fix these issues, you are prompted to upgrade to the paid version. But as mentioned earlier, corrupted registries often do not significantly impact your PC if left alone.

Some speculate that Avast includes fragmented registries created during software or system upgrades in its warnings to encourage free users to switch to the paid version. Fixing corrupted registries does not necessarily require purchasing antivirus software, as Windows has built-in tools, and free software can often resolve these issues.

Before upgrading your Avast to the paid version, try the following solutions.

Repairing Corrupted Registries Using Windows Features

Let’s look at some methods to repair or remove corrupted registries using the standard features available in Windows 10. Windows offers a surprising number of repair tools.

    Using Disk Cleanup:

The easiest way to remove corrupted registries is to use the Disk Cleanup feature.

    • Click the search icon next to the Start button or press Windows + S on your keyboard to search for Disk Cleanup.
    • Launch Disk Cleanup and wait for the system to calculate the data.
    • Click “Clean up system files” at the bottom left of the screen.
    • Wait for the calculation of unnecessary system files to finish.
    • Check all the displayed items and click OK to remove them.

    Using the Automatic Repair Feature:

Windows 10 has an automatic repair feature that can fix corrupted registries. If Disk Cleanup does not resolve the issue, try this method.

    • Open the settings screen by clicking the search icon next to the Start button or pressing Windows + S on your keyboard.
    • Click “Update & Security” at the bottom of the list displayed in the settings.
    • Click “Recovery” from the left menu.
    • Click “Restart now” under “Advanced startup.”
    • Select “Troubleshoot” from the options displayed.
    • Follow the sequence “Advanced options” → “Startup Repair” → “Recovery” to start the system repair.

    Using System Restore:

Similar to the automatic repair feature, System Restore can fix corrupted registries with simple steps. If you know when the registry might have been corrupted, this operation restores the system to the state before the issue occurred.

    • Search for “System Restore” using the search icon next to the Start button or Windows + S.
    • Select a restore point, and the system will detect files and data affected by the restore. Confirm if there are no issues (use backups if necessary).
    • Proceed to the next step and click “Finish” to start the restore.

Resetting Windows 10 Without Losing Data:

If the automatic repair or system restore does not fix the corrupted registry, consider resetting Windows 10. This operation keeps personal data like photos and videos.

    • Open the settings screen by pressing Windows + S on your keyboard.
    • Click “Update & Security” and then “Recovery” from the left menu.
    • Click “Get started” under “Reset this PC” and choose “Keep my files.”
    • Confirm the data to be removed and click “Next” and then “Reset” to proceed.

    Using SFC Scan:

Windows 10 allows you to check the registry’s status and restore it to a previous state using the Command Prompt. This method works even if you cannot boot Windows normally by opening Safe Mode with Command Prompt. However, direct manipulation of the Command Prompt can lead to unexpected issues, so proceed only if necessary and you accept the risks.

    • To open Command Prompt, search for it from the Start button and run it as an administrator if Windows is running.
    • If Windows cannot boot, press the Start button and repeatedly press F8 to display the startup menu and select “Safe mode with Command Prompt.”
    • Type sfc /scannow and press Enter.
    • Wait for the scan to finish and restart the PC.

Free Software to Restore Corrupted Registries

Besides Windows’ standard features, free software can also remove or repair corrupted registries. Free registry repair software may work smoothly on your PC, but it can also cause errors or issues, so use it cautiously.

    CCleaner:

CCleaner is a free cleaner software that removes unnecessary data accumulated on your PC, including corrupted registries, temporary files, and unwanted files from various software. It can replace Windows Disk Cleanup.

    • Download and install CCleaner from its official website.
    • Launch the software (you can decline any offers for paid plans).
    • Click “Registry” from the left menu.
    • Click “Scan for issues.”
    • Check all items and click “Review Selected Issues.”
    • Choose whether to back up changes before fixing issues.
    • Confirm the items and click “Fix Issue” or “Fix All Selected Issues” to repair them.
